I hadn’t tried to stick something in a cut or wound makeup, so I decided it was time to try. Originally, I wanted to do a nail-in-the-head look, but realized that makeups we see on film and tv like this use nails created to be light and porous so they will adhere to the glue. Instead, I decided to stick a pencil in my face.

The Process
The first thing I did was create a bruise around where I was going to put the prosthetic. When I started, I was going to do an entrance and exit wound, but by the time I got to building my prosthetic, it wasn’t working. The bruise I laid down mostly ended up covered, but it was helpful to have the exterior coloring already where I wanted it.

I took some SynWax, a broken pencil, and some parchment paper and sculpted out my stab wound prosthetic. From there, I applied it with spirit gum. I took more softened Syn Wax and blended the prosthetic into my skin as best I could. To smooth it all out, I blended in a layer of Elmer’s glue in place of liquid latex.
Next, it was time to paint. I put just a touch of black underneath the pencil, and painted the edge of the entrance wound with the dark red brown in the Mehron bruise wheel. Next, I took the bright red and blended it around the area to create some skin irritation, then yellow at the farthest point. After a dash of stage blood, the look was complete!
