Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

I collaborated with opera director Chas Rader Shieber to create an unrealized design for a production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni set in the Cavalier era. The shapes of the costume design are true to the Cavalier period, but feature elements of transparency, opacity, and exposure that are not concurrent with traditional period garments. Donna Anna, for example, begins the opera completely and perhaps unwillingly exposed, and progresses through the first act attempting to regain her sense of control by adding layers of opacity to her sheer dress. Donna Elvira, on the other hand, embraces her transparency and pursuit of Don Giovanni.
